The match between Utah Royals FC and Reign FC, which has significant playoff implications, will have to wait.
Less than three hours before kickoff, both teams announced Wednesday’s match would be postponed due to the surface at Cheney Field being rendered “unplayable.” Heavy rains in the Tacoma, Washington, area over the last several days led to the decision.
The teams did not immediately announce a make-up date for the game.
“The safety of the players is of the utmost priority, and as such, both clubs and the NWSL came to a collective agreement to reschedule tonight’s match,” Reign FC said in a statement.
The Reign said all tickets for Wednesday’s game will be valid when presented for the new game. It is unclear if the rescheduled game will be still be played at Cheney Stadium.
Royals defender Rachel Corsie on Twitter apologized to fans when news of the suspended game broke.
“Apologies for anyone who had already travelled,” Corsie wrote.
