A small plane struck a billboard and then crashed beside the freeway in Weber County on Sunday afternoon, FOX 13 reports. Both occupants on board were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Around 3:30 p.m., the single-engine Piper Cherokee crashed between I-15 and 1-84, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA says the plane crashed shortly after taking off. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, which will likely take about a year to complete.
Southbound 1-15 is closed because of the crash, says the Utah Highway Patrol. Drivers are asked to use I-84 and surface streets or avoid the area entirely.
