No leads yet on missing mother and daughter, police say

Salt Lake City police have no leads in the disappearance of Eugenia Martinez-Juarez, 17, and her 3-year-old daughter, Sandra Juarez-Martinez.

They were last seen in the area of 200 S. Pueblo St. — in the Poplar Grove neighborhood on the city’s west side — on Thursday at approximately 2 p.m., according to police.

Martinez-Juarez’s relatives told FOX 13 that she and her daughter left her parents’ home that afternoon, “telling them she was going to look for a job.”

When they didn’t return by Friday, Martinez-Juarez’s father reported them missing to the police.

“The mom has very little money, no cellphone to speak of, no relatives in the area, no friends in the area,” Salt Lake City Police Detective Greg Wilking told FOX 13. “She is newly into Utah from Mexico so there is a language barrier there along with not knowing the area.”

The police have been “going from place to place trying to figure out what happened,” said Sergeant Keith Horrocks, police spokesman. “Bus stations, train stations, hospital, shelters, food pantries, even talked to school resource officers where kids get free lunch. We are limited on leads and what we can do.”

“One of our biggest concerns is that if somebody in their community is worried about [their] immigration status, they won’t call police,” Horrocks said. “But Salt Lake City police don’t care about that.”

The police have not asked the state to set up an Amber Alert for the pair because the disappearance doesn’t fit the conditions necessary for such an alert, Horrocks said. “We don’t have specific information to think they were kidnapped or are in harm’s way.”

But the police did enter information about Martinez-Juarez and her daughter into a national database, Horrocks said. “If they are stopped by any other law enforcements or check into a hospital, that would alert whoever is with them, they are missing out of Salt Lake City.”

The police continue to ask the public to call 801-799-3000 if they have information about the mother and daughter.
