Utah fire officials say that 33 wildfires were started over the weekend — almost all of which were human-caused.
And two more wildfires were sparked on Monday. Firefighters were working to control 11 fires that are burning throughout the state, most torching hundreds of acres.
The latest is the Strawberry Fire, located at Bowers Flat, north of Mammoth Creek in Kane County. It has burned through about 70 acres of timber as of 5 p.m. on Monday. Fire officials say there has been evacuations and structures are threatened, but no other information was immediately available.
Also sparked Monday is the Dennis Hill Fire, which has quickly burned through 700 acres due to 20 mph winds. The northern Utah blaze is burning near Park Valley.
Officials did not know yet what caused either fire.
Here’s an update on the other wildfires that crews continue to fight:
• The Turkey Farm Fire, three miles west of Washington City, was 75% contained as of Monday at nearly 12,000 acres.
• Firefighters were patrolling and mopping up hot spots at the 2,618-acre Veyo West Fire, near the town of Veyo, also in Washington County, according to Utah Wildfire Info. According to the most recent update, that fire was 90% contained.
• The Big Summit Fire, which has burned 8,461 acres in Iron County along the Nevada-Utah border, was 54% contained as of Monday afternoon. Firefighters expected to contain the fire by Monday night, according to Utah Wildfire Info.
• The Pole Canyon Fire, which was sparked Wednesday by a bulldozer near the Eagle Mountain neighborhood of White Hills, was 93% contained at 488 acres.
• The Cottonwood Trail Fire, which has burned through 1,631 acres in Washington County, is 35% contained. It was sparked by a blown tire.
• The Big Hollow Fire, which started Thursday south of Heber City, had burned 438 acres and was 95% contained as of Monday.
• The 40-acre Allen Fire in Daggett County along the Utah-Colorado border was still 90% contained Monday. Lightning is suspected as the cause, and no structures were threatened.
• The Split Fire is also burning near the Utah-Colorado border, with no containment on the 18-acre blaze.
• The Howell Peak Fire has burned 400 acres in Millard County since Sunday. No other information, including whether it has been contained, was available.
