Utah police officer suspected of sex with probationer

A police officer in Price was arrested last month on suspicion of having sex with a woman on probation.

The officer, Michael G. Jones, 30, resigned on Aug. 3, three days after his arrest, according to the Price Police Department. A search of court records shows Jones has not formally been charged with any crimes.

Utah law calls sex between peace officers and inmates, probationers or parolees custodial sexual relations. It can be a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

A probable cause statement said Utah Adult Probation and Parole and a Carbon County sheriff’s deputy both received information that Jones had sex with multiple women on probation. On July 31, an investigator for the Carbon County attorney’s office interviewed Jones.

Jones, according to the probable cause statement, denied having sex with two women but admitted having intercourse with a third, saying the intercourse happened in his police car and at his home.

He was booked into the jail in neighboring Emery County.

“While transporting Mr. Jones to the Emery County Jail,” the arresting investigator wrote, “he told me that he was remorseful and sorry to all the people he hurt for his actions.”
