After bogeying four of the last eight holes in Saturday’s third round of the U.S. Open, Tony Finau will need a rally Sunday to earn another top-10 finish in a major golf tournament.
The West High School graduate was 1 under par for the day through 10 holes, before his trouble with driving accuracy took a toll at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. Finau posted a second straight 3-over-par 73 after opening with a 69 and is tied for 21st place at 5 over. He placed in the top 10 in six of the previous nine majors, including a tie for fourth place in the PGA Championship last month in San Francisco.
Finau, who turned 31 on Monday, birdied the par-4 No. 2 by making a 22-foot putt and added an 8-foot birdie on the par-3 No. 10. Four of his five bogeys came on par-4s (Nos. 8, 11, 15 and 18), usually stemming from drives deep into the rough. The exception was No. 18, according to the United States Golf Association website’s shot-by-shot account. He drove the ball in the fairway and had 175 yards for his approach shot, but came up well short of the green and couldn’t save his par. He also bogeyed the par-3 No. 13 from a greenside bunker.
Finau hit 4 of 14 fairways from the tee and 10 of 18 greens in regulation Saturday, after entering the round in a tie for 17th.
